What’s the event?

In July 2010, the Women’s Champions Trophy will arrive in Nottingham. It is one of the highest ranked events in the international hockey calendar, giving six of the top nations in the world the opportunity to compete for the Champions title. In the build up to the 2012 Olympics in London, this is hockey’s chance to welcome the top women’s teams in the world.

In addition to the Champions Trophy, there will also be an invitational Men’s Four Nations Test Series played alongside the event providing even more action. Together with catering, hockey shops, giveaways, a Fun Zone, a big screen TV and a great sound system, this is an event not to be missed!

Who’s playing?

England qualify automatically as hosts. Joining them will be Argentina, New Zealand, China and Germany. Oh – and then there’s the current Olympic, World and European Champions as well...The Netherlands.

In the supporting men’s event, Great Britain will be having their first outing on British soil prior to that rather large sporting event in London in 2012. They will be joined by Japan, New Zealand and Germany.

Teachers go free...

...with every 10 paying students. When you buy 10 tickets, you get the 11th free, so for every 10 students you bring, you can bring another teacher for free! Of course, the freebie isn’t limited to teachers, but with tickets for Under 18s starting at just £7.50, it makes sense to get the adult ticket for free!

But what about that pesky risk assessment?

We call it pesky, but you’ve probably got another word for it! Yep. We know that to organise a school trip, you will need to complete a risk assessment, so that’s why we’ve pulled together all of the vital information you will need. We’ve made it available on the event website at www.wct2010.com/schools. We can’t promise you that all of the information you need for your particular risk assessment is there (mainly because we haven’t seen the form you need to fill in!), but we can promise you that we’ve provided all the details we can to make that part of your job as easy as we can.

Looking for additional ways to tick that ‘cross-curricular’ box?

You know as well as we do that field trips are a good way of showing that your school loves doing cross-curricular activities! A field trip just on its own presents lots of ways to tick that cross-curricular box and ‘helps to make learning real and relevant’ – as the folks at the QCA would say! But we don’t want to leave it there! We will be coming up with various ideas of how you can link this event to the National Curriculum. We will be providing guides and information on the tournament website as to how you can use the event to stimulate your students in various subject areas. We’ve not quite finished working on this yet, but we will make sure that it’s ready for you to use by the end of spring term in 2010. If you would like us to drop you an e-mail when all the information is available, then just let us know. You can
register your details for this service at www.wct2010.com/schools.

We’re not really interested in hockey at our school!

If you’re not interested in hockey but have made it through to this point, then thank you! You may have the traditional ‘jolly hockey sticks’ image in your head, but we dare you to give the sport a chance. Hockey is a fast and exciting highly skilled game. In fact, when we hosted the European Championships in Manchester in 2007, a number of regular football followers who happened to find themselves watching hockey for the first time, commented on the fact that the sport was a lot more skilful with more fast-paced action than the Beautiful Game! That’s just their opinion though (even though we agree) and it’s up to you to make your own judgement. All we ask is that you put aside any preconceived ideas when thinking about the event.

Where do we sign up?

Visit the tournament website and click on the schools section where you will find that risk assessment information. You can buy tickets online as well – U18s can get a seat for just £7.50 . Don’t forget to register your interest in receiving information about our ideas
on how to link the event to the National Curriculum as well.
